During locomotive rebuilding and maintenance, components are cleaned to remove oils, greases, and dirt. If these parts are not properly cleaned, contaminant build up can cause problems such as reduced efficiency, increased wear and tear, and even equipment failure. Engine Components: The locomotive’s engine is a critical component that often needs to be rebuilt during its lifespan. This involves overhauling parts such as pistons, cylinders, valves, gaskets, fuel injectors, turbochargers, and engine bearings, all of which are cleaned using large parts washers and detergents.

Bearings: Wheel bearings, traction motor bearings, and gearbox bearings are commonly repaired or rebuilt, and parts cleaning is usually a factor in this process.

Wheelsets: Locomotive wheelsets endure significant wear and tear. Rebuilding the wheelsets requires cleaning them prior to repair and reassembly. PMW designs custom parts washers to clean locomotive wheelsets.

Fuel System: Diesel locomotives have fuel systems that consist of fuel injectors, pumps, filters, and tanks. These components often require cleaning, rebuilding, or replacement to maintain proper fuel delivery.

Cooling System: The locomotive’s cooling system includes radiators, fans, pumps, and hoses. Rebuilding or replacing these parts ensures efficient cooling and prevents engine overheating. We offer a wide variety of rust inhibitors for maintaining these systems.

Electrical System: Locomotive generators, alternators, traction motors, control circuits, wiring, and connectors are often rebuilt or repaired. Automatic parts cleaning is commonly employed during this process.

Traction Motors: Overhauling or rebuilding traction motors may include cleaning bearings, armatures, and field coils.
